This booklet is about the life and missionary endeavours of Reverend Bowen Rees, a London
Missionary Society (LMS) missionary who served alongside his wife Susannah Wesley Rees
at Inyathi Mission in Matabeleland from 1888 till 1918 when he and family left to serve at
Tiger Kloof in South Africa. Reverend Rees, whom the Ndebele called uLesi, was
instrumental in the establishment of LMS outstations particularly in Nkayi District, part of
the designated Shangani Reserve created in 1894 to receive defeated Ndebele people who
were being evicted from their ancestral lands. Among the outstations that he helped set up
were Sivalo, Dakamela, Madliwa, Malinga and Sikhobokhobo.
