Set in the 1870’s to 1810’s Cape colony, Khayalethu: The Promised Land is a historical novel about the then Xhosa king, Ngqika. It was also during the time when the Xhosa and the Dutch had a clash for the control of what was termed as the sumbolic Promised Land that all were ready to perish for. Erapu captures on of South Africa’s historical hotspots and paints this recollective story with his inclusion of the racial mix and clashes along with the Khoi Khoi who proverbially referred to as “grass that suffers when elephants fight”.
