eoff Olivier grew up in Durbanville and spent holidays on the family farm in the Karoo, where he developed a fascination with the San people and their history.

The idea for Runs Gently Upon the Earth began in 1996, but it was only in 2020 that he started writing the novel. Despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic and cancer treatment, he completed the manuscript, drawing on his research, life experiences and deep connection to the Karoo.
