We also weave through urban dramas and popular fiction by the likes of Ben Okri, Zakes Mda, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Zane, Isadore Johnson as well as biographies of African heroes: Nelson Mandela, Malcom X, Kwame Nkrumah, Martin Luther King and a whole lot more.
That’s not all. We also sell music (DVDs, music videos, and CDs) and art from across the continent of Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and the rest of the African diaspora. Moreover, we excellent at organising book launches, discussions and exhibitions.
Essentially, Xarra Books is an artistic confluence of Africa’s landscape, skyscape and mindscape and explores the depths and heights of Africa’s past, present and future creativity and experiences through literature, music and visual art.We call this the Xarra ‘Xperience’.
The name ‘Xarra’ is from the Khoi language, one of the oldest African languages, which is nearing extinction as it is not considered an ‘official’ language. ‘Xarra’ also forms part of the motto on the South African Coat of Arms in the words ‘ǃke e: ǀxarra ǁke’, which mean “diverse people unite.’
There are ongoing awareness campaigns around celebrating, reclaiming, preserving and rewriting African history, early languages and culture, thereby restoring African pride.‘Xarra’ is a tribute to indigenous African peoples, culture, and language which was almost lost. Welcome to Xarra Books.
